This is the 3rd move in the Jack Ryan Series. (Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and now Clear and Present Danger. This one is better than Patriot Games, but still doesn't have the excitement and the pull for me that Hunt for Red October had. Clear and Present Danger starts out with a bang when one of the United States President's best friends is killed aboard a yacht and it seems like foul play. But, in the end it ends up being drug related.
This opens up a battle with Columbia in which the President decides to make a little "war" with the South American country. But, he does not want to be held liable for it. So, he basically gets it going with the help of his NSA (National Security Advisor) and a few fall guy Army men and lastly Willen Dafoe's character John Clark. When the President pulls the plug, it leaves the army guys out in the cold and CIA Agent Clark out in the cold also. Basically one big mess because the POTUS (President of the U.S.) didn't want to be associated with it.
As a CIA big dog, Jack Ryan tries to figure out what happened, and when he does he decides to go down to Columbia and rescue the Army guys that stuck their necks out and also the CIA Agent who was helping. He gets them out and now there is one last thing to do.. He wants to go before Congress to explain what happened.
This post does not give the whole story. For that, watch the movie. But, for an idea... I think this will give you a small smidge of what this movie is about. Politics, Washington, CIA stuff and more politics.
Sad, but effective in this movie.
I give it a 7 out of 10.
