Problem - scanner not working with version 4.0

Post by pro.customer » Sat Jan 01, 2011 7:31 pm

When I received the email regarding the release of version 4 of Movienizer, with the mention that scanners could be used to read barcodes to update my database, I was ecstatic. I was even more impressed that my particular barcode scanner was mentioned in the email. I downloaded version 4 and tried it out to no avail. I checked all settings and couldn’t find anything that might make a difference.

I decided to try a test. I created a new database, selected 11 random movies from my collection and scanned the barcodes with my scanner. The following table is the result. All barcodes were scanned properly but out of the 11 movies only three located the movie information correctly with all the others displaying ‘Movie not found’.

I tried using my camera and the first movie ‘The American’ resulted in the same ‘Movie not found’ response.

I am using a licensed copy of Movienizer 4.0 Build 190 from 12/31/10

What might I do to correct this problem? I believe it has to be something I’m doing wrong. I don’t believe a new option like this being included in a paid upgrade and not actually functioning.

I also tried searching by ‘title’ to locate these movies and came up with the following results in table 2:

Scanning Barcodes
Title Bar Code Success
The American 065935842439 No
The Commitments/The Full Monty 02454367052050 No
Knight and Day 883929159659 No

Table 1

[bSearch by Title[/b]
Title Bar Code Success
The American 065935842439 Yes
The Commitments/The Full Monty 02454367052050 No

Sorry about the messy tables, not sure how to create a better layout here.

Could you please provide a reliable source of information for the barcodes that Movienizer could not find? Amazon does not seem to know these barcodes, DVDEmpire either.

02454367052050, 02454369800550 seem to be incorrect bar codes.

I've tried to learn about barcodes over the last couple of days but to no avail. It's beyond me. I wouldn't know a 'reliable source of information' about barcodes if it hit me in the face.

Here's the deal. I'm just a guy with a lot of stuff that needs to be catalogued. I used to use Wensoftware’s Movie library until it was not supported for years. I switched to Collectorz Movie Collector because they offered a scanner that would read the barcodes that made it easier to create my libraries for movies, books and music. I switched to Movienizer mainly because Collectorz relies more on their own proprietary database with some user inputted movie descriptions. Not something I liked when the description starts out with “This movie is about…”. I appreciate Movienizer’s use of more ‘official’ sources such as IMDB.

The only way for me to prove the authenticity of the barcodes for the movies I previously mentioned is to scan the back covers of each movie case and provide that as proof. I’ve provided a link below to the back covers for you convenience. If you click on the thumbnails and download the larger image you can get a better view of the barcodes. If the country I live in uses inaccurate barcodes then I guess I have a serious problem.

As a final note, Collectorz was able to locate almost all of the same 10 movies. It was not able to provide the information for ‘The Commitments/The Full Monty’ nor was it able to provide actor list and story description for ‘Wall Street – Money Never Sleeps’ although it did provide the front and back covers and edition details for the latter.

I’m not saying that Collectorz is better than Movienizer, I’m simply saying that there is a difference in how each program processes barcodes. If Collectorz can do it then I would hope that Movienizer can also do it. Hopefully I haven’t offended anyone in this follow-up.

Thanks for the scans. The problem with some of them is that they are using barcode additions, so as the whole they are not correct barcodes. We will adjust the module accordingly, so it is likely to be fixed in the next build.

When I saw your message that an update was available I was very happy since I had just purchased two movies earlier today. I started Movienizer and used the "Check updates" from the Help menu and was informed that I had the latest version (Version 4.0. Build 192 from 1/1/11). I also checked your website and the main page also reflects that this is still the latest version. I thought that maybe it was just an update to a script so I updated all scripts, restarted Movienizer and tried scanning the two new movies with the same results as before. What am I missing?

The two movies I tried scanning are listed below.

043396370104 - The Social Network
02454370147750 - The A-Team

As an added note, I scanned the barcodes into Collectorz Movie Collector and both movies were recognized immediately.

Installing build 193 should help :). It is not available for the update checker yet (it's not a critical update).

OK, I just installed build 193 and updated all scripts to be on the safe side. I also restarted the program as an added precaution. It's still not working. It does accept the barcode numbers from the scanner accurately but I still receive the message 'movie not found' rather than the movie title. I also tried using my camera again with the same result. Any more suggestions? Could it be something about the settings or outside of the program? I really want to get this working right. It's a great idea and more convenient than typing titles all the time.
